Wayne T. Sterling, PLA, LEED-AP
Wayne leads Sterling Design Associates with more than 25 years of experience in site development and landscape architecture, with most of those years as the president of the company. His extensive expertise in designing and coordinating commercial retail centers, restaurants, and office/warehouse projects has defined SDA as a leader in commercial and retail development. In addition to the commercial project knowledge, he as urban redevelopment, parks and recreation facilities and military base campus projects as part of his portfolio. Wayne not only oversees the day to day operations of the company, but is actively managing site design and entitlement processes for projects throughout the Western U.S. Wayne is a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. He is also the recipient of Award of honor from the New Mexico chapter of ASLA for Grandview Park in Gallup, NM.

Jay M. Newell, PE
Vice President, Director of Engineering
Jay’s 20-plus years of engineering expertise in commercial land development throughout the Rocky Mountain region provides the engineering leadership for Sterling Design Associates. In addition to commercial properties, he also has experience working directly with municipal and federal agencies to achieve quality design for public infrastructure. Client relationships are the backbone of the company’s success, and those clients rely on Jay’s substantial site design experience to navigate reviewing agency requirements and provide a design that works. His involvement with projects ranging from one acre to over 200 acres and his extensive site redevelopment knowledge are an asset for corporate clientele, development companies, and architectural firms. Jay has a B.S. in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University.

Jonathan D. Spencer, PLA
Vice President, Director of Landscape Architecture
With over 20 years of experience in commercial and residential design as well as design/build projects, Jonathan brings a comprehensive skillset to all of the projects he undertakes. His creative and practical approach to site and landscape design projects provide clients with realistic solutions to complex design challenges. His breadth of knowledge and management experience includes work on hospitality, retail, warehouse, medical/professional, urban redevelopment, streetscapes, energy facilities and custom residential projects. In addition, past work on LEED-certified developments gives him the conservation perspective on all of his projects. Jonathan is a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture.

Cynthia M. Pedrioli, PLA
Principal, Planning & Entitlements
Cynthia’s nearly 20 years of experience in entitlements, site design and analysis of regional systems provides the Sterling Design team with a comprehensive perspective on projects. She has a solid understanding of planning and landscape design for projects of all sizes, from single commercial pad sites to master-planned communities and regional park systems. Her breadth of experience includes work for private and public entities and includes detailed site research, demographic and budget analysis, written and graphic design guidelines, and on-site landscape and water conservation analysis. Cynthia works as a client liaison and project representative to deliver municipal entitlement submittals, meetings with stakeholders and presentations to boards and councils for project approvals. She is a graduate of Colorado State University with a B.S. in Landscape Architecture.

Joseph L. Wilson, PLA, ASLA, CID
Principal, Landscape Architect
Joseph’s 20 years of project management experience from concept design through construction administration in over 20 states gives him a wealth of perspective on projects of any size from start to finish. His design background includes projects with metro districts, sports facilities, school districts, military bases and commercial development. Additionally, Joseph has a certification with the Irrigation Association as a Certified Irrigation Designer (CID) and has audited over 100+ installed/existing irrigation systems in over 12 states. Joseph’s projects range from 1/2 acre pocket parks to 100+ acre irrigation master plans. Staying up to date on the latest technologies/techniques in the irrigation industry, and with years of experience in landscape architecture, Joseph has the ability to analyze site design, identify any special landscape and irrigation requirements, and match an efficient water design with a solid site design to meet client needs. Joseph is a graduate of Kansas State University with a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture.

Joel D. Tompkins, PE, CPESC, LEED-AP
Principal, Civil Engineer
While managing commercial, retail, residential, industrial, multi-use and public infrastructure projects for over 25 years, Joel has developed a comprehensive methodology for completing projects with the best design in mind. In addition to his strong technical knowledge of how sites should drain and function, Joel also manages all aspects of projects for Sterling Design Associates, including site design, construction plans, cost estimates, bidding and close-out. He also provides extensive experience working with water and sanitation districts and provides project coordination on multi-diciplinary teams. Joel received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas.

Ryan J. Loftus, PE
Senior Project Engineer
Ryan is a project engineer with 11 years of experience in land development and site design in both Colorado and the Northeastern U.S. His attention to detail and experience in park renovations, drainage solutions, cost projections, and construction drawings provides well-rounded experience for any project. He has a comprehensive understanding of site design and how changes to drainage or slope impact playgrounds, trails, plazas, sidewalks, and other site conditions. He is an integral part of any team, working with other site specialists to create solutions that meet the regulatory requirements as well as the aesthetics the team is trying to achieve. In addition, his past experience in septic design, underground detention, specification writing, and Civil 3D design provide additional areas of expertise to Sterling Design Associates. Ryan is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.

Michael E. Haaf, PLA
Project Landscape Architect
Michael brings over 20 years of design experience in both the Florida region and Colorado to Sterling Design Associates. His diverse experience includes planning and design of commercial sites, mixed-use projects, corporate campuses, cemeteries, streetscapes, parks, sports complexes and residential communities. His expertise with site planning, landscape and hardscape design, bid processing, cost estimating and contract administration results in strong project management for any projects he undertakes. Michael graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Landscape Architecture.

Anthony J. Young, PE
With over 4 years of design experience with commercial site development projects, Anthony has quickly become an integral member of the Sterling Design Associates team. His understanding and attention to detail in plan production, along with skills in site grading, drainage, stormwater management, hydraulic/hydrologic modeling, and underground utility design provides clients with innovative solutions to meet their project’s needs. Anthony graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering.
Jared D. Martinez, EI
As a veteran of the United States Air Force Jared’s interest in civil engineering sparked from the training for rapid runway repair and bare base setup. His 8 years of civil design experience in both New Mexico and Colorado includes highly technical water and wastewater infrastructure design involving pressure zone optimization, system-wide water modeling for municipalities, trenchless utility design for large diameter waterlines, potable water pump stations, and sanitary sewer lift stations. In addition to his technical infrastructure experience, Jared also has a background in water and wastewater master planning, commercial and residential land development, cost estimations, construction administration and Civil 3D. Jared is a graduate of New Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology.
